Questioning "Kemajuan": Local-Global Values in Development Discourse Trajectories in North Kendeng, Central Java

Abstract
This article discusses the contestation of local and global values of development (kemajuan) in the place where the industrial extractive tried to impose. For the last fifteen years, people in North Kendeng in Central Java have faced some national mining companies that want to plant there. Furthermore, the state has supported this project as the national development agenda. Meanwhile, by doing alternative scientific research on ecological issues and the underground river system and using it in the courts and several academic debates, peasants and colleagues organized in Jaringan Masyarakat Peduli Pegunungan Kendeng (JM-PPK) against the project on the local, national and international scene. The post-pandemic situation gave more profound insight into each side's objective of the development agenda in North Kendeng in contradictory ways.
