Approaching 20 Years of the Aceh Tsunami Commemoration: Lessons from Manuscripts and UNESCO Memories of the World

Abstract


The Aceh Tsunami that occurred on December 26, 2004, became one of the biggest disasters that ever occurred and in 2017 the Tsunami Archive was designated as a UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW). In terms of recovery, “The emergency response to the Aceh tsunami in 2004 was the largest non-combat operation after the 2nd World War. So many countries and NGOs were involved, even war equipment and fleets were deployed.” The December 26 tsunami disaster hit dozens of countries in Asia and Africa, such as The tragedy opened the eyes of the world to the importance of understanding disasters for better prevention and management. One of the government institutions with the tsunami archives is the Aceh ANRI Static and Tsunami Archives, which carries out the acquisition, processing, preservation, and servicing and utilizing the static archives of central-level state institutions in the Aceh Government area and the tsunami archives. BAST ANRI Archives Treasure in supporting the Center for Disaster/Tsunami Archive Studies: has a collection of: 8,868.4 Linear Meter Paper Archives. Architectural Archives 495 Linear meters. Map Archives 5,536 Sheets. CD/DVD/VCD Archive 1,226 Discs. Cassette Archives 52 Cassettes. Photo Archive 1979 Sheet. 43 Disc Disk Archive. If the treasures of the BAST archives are synergized with institutions that have disaster texts such as the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Provincial Museum, Ali Hasjmy Aceh Education Foundation, Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Archipelago Manuscripts Center for Religious Literature and Treasures (LKKMO), British Library EAP Digital Archives, it could be used as a reference in disaster mitigation so that disaster management becomes better not only in Indonesia but throughout the world. This paper uses the historical method, from this paper it is hoped that it can be a reflection of the use of ancient texts about the disaster and also the Aceh tsunami archives as Unesco's Memory of the World.
