Abstract

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) implemented the strategy of climate mitigation in 2009 by creating the estimation of carbon trace from the tournament and its main activities in order to fulfill the requirement of emission volume, as regulated in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GGP). In 2022, FIFA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Asia Pacific Islands Forum (APIF) to fight against the climate change. Such commitment to reduce the carbon emission has been voiced by FIFA in order to achieve the global objective by decreasing it by 50 percent in 2030 and achieve the carbon neutrality by 2040. Indonesia as the largest archipelago country in the world has been contributing a high number of carbon emission during the implementation of League 1 competition season 2019/2020 with the home and away format matches. This situation was in contradictory during the pandemic of COVID-19 and forced Indonesia to change the format of the matches with a centralized one as well as focusing in several areas on the Java island. The carbon emission has reduced due to the decreasing of travelling distance compared to when the home and away format was implemented. By using the method of descriptive-comparative, this journal presents the comparison of carbon emission by these two format matches of League 1 in Indonesia, which is before and during the pandemic of COVID-19. The result shows that the carbon emission produced during the football competition of League 1 in Indonesia can be reduced and implement FIFA commitment as well as its strategy of climate mitigation.
