This journal article aims to answer the never-ending debate on whether Malaysia and Indonesia are secular or Islamic state and whether a state can choose not to be either one of them. Apart from that the journal article aims to also discuss with regard to what amounts to Islamic state and what amounts to a secular state.  The journal article will discuss the positions of both countries based on the historical approach, constitutional provisions, provisions in acts of law as well as landmark decisions decided by the apex courts of both countries. This discussion is not only important when discussing regarding legal systems of countries, i.e Indonesia and Malaysia but it is also very much relevant when the discussion revolves around security as these kinds of topics are usually discussions that can trigger disputes/friction within the people of one country
