Abstract

Jakarta, as a third-world metropolitan, accommodates agricultural sites, although agriculture is a marginal activity in the city. The existence of urban agriculture space in Jakarta has appeared out of nowhere. Instead, it is a series of processes involving spatial practice, representations of space, and representational space of the actors. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the production of this urban agriculture space in Jakarta. What is the form of urban agricultural space in Jakarta? We conducted qualitative research by conducting semi-structured interviews with the farmers, government officials, and the people who control vacant lands to identify the production of urban agriculture space through spatial practice, representations of space, and representational space. This research finds that spatial practice has been established because of urban-rural linkages where farmers from rural areas migrate to Jakarta and continue their livelihoods as farmers in Jakarta. The latter has been enabled by the representations of space by private property companies who invest in land assets expecting the price to increase. So that they lend it to the farmers until they use their land because the farmers help them maintain their land claim. Consequently, the farmers live in mediocre conditions near their paddy field location. The latter shows the representational space as the everyday life of the farmer.
