Abstract

As a participant in The Paris Agreement, Indonesia through Badan Restorasi Gambut (BRG) shows its commitment to reducing carbon production through peatland restoration. Nevertheless, engagement with the communities is critical to making all forms of peatland restoration programs successful. Without the participation and support from the communities, the peatland restoration will not reach its goal. This paper highlights the limitation of community participation and examines suitable measures to enhance community participation in peatland restoration, particularly in Tanjung Leban Village, Riau Province, Indonesia. This location is one of the most suffering villages during the peatland fire disaster back in 2015. Policy recommendations and practice guidelines to enhance community participation in peatland restoration were also proposed. A field survey base that includes the use of both primary and secondary methods of collecting reliable data and adequate information was adopted in that location.  The primary sources of data include the personal interview, focus group discussion (FGD), and a questionnaire administered to the study area. Primary data sources include personal interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), and questionnaires given to 5 target groups: the government, community organizations, community groups, local residents, and experts. The outcome of this research would be an analysis of gaps and limitations of community participation in peatland restoration and to be a future alternative to enhance community participation in peatland restoration.
