Abstract
Abstract. Sustainable tourism requires valuable and useful resources, balancing between the economic community, cultural and environmental objectives, and realizing the carrying capacity of resources. This paper study on the tourism situation in Banjarnegara City, Central Java, Indonesia using the three pillars of sustainable tourism: Social, Economic, and Environmental. This study aims to assess tourism in Banjarnegara to be sustainable following the indicators from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council Destination Criteria (GSTC-D) and publications in international journals that use "sustainable tourism indicators" as keywords. Stakeholder mapping uses purposive sampling by interviewing 21 experts who have been in the tourism world for approximately 5 years was utilized as a sampling technique. The indicator measurement questionnaire was conducted using a 5-point Likert scale with 28 questions to measure the opinion of stakeholders from strongly disagree to strongly agree, accompanied by in-depth interviews. The results highlighted that Community support, job availability, Community Based Tourism (CBT), and accessibility are the most influential indicator in the social pillar. Tourism economic data, promotion of eco-based tourism, and marketing of SME products and other tourism products are the most dominating indicators in the economic pillar. Water waste management, waste management, appeal to public awareness, the use of public transportation, and promotion of environmentally friendly transportation are the most affecting indicator in the environmental indicator. It also concluded that the increase in the number of tourists affects the increase of Banjarnegara's income in the tourism sector which, simultaneously, will affect their environmental management. Ultimately, each indicator generated in this study can be used as a sustainable tourism standard in the development of Banjarnegara tourism.
