Abstract

The rise of destructive fishing practices that occurs in the coastal waters of Samatellu Pedda Island, South Sulawesi has an impact on coral reef ecosystems and water quality. Monitoring the health of coral reef ecosystems can be conducted by measuring water quality through dissolved oxygen. The dissolved oxygen concentration in the coastal waters represents the amount of oxygen that acts as an indicator of water pollution. This study discusses the spatial and temporal distribution of dissolved oxygen concentrations and the effect of destructive fishing practices on dissolved oxygen concentrations through benthic habitat and water depth variables. The dissolved oxygen concentration was obtained through algorithm application on Landsat 8 TIRS imagery. The results of this study showed that from 2014 to 2021, there was an increase in the dissolved oxygen concentration in all water areas. In addition, destructive fishing practices do not have a significant effect on dissolved oxygen concentration since remote sensing data of dissolved oxygen in this study is homogeneous.
