Abstract

Objective: Depression may affect to thyroid disorder patients due biological, psychological and sociological factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictor factors based on the biological (i.e Thyroid Stimulating Hormone and free Thyroxine), psychological (i.e stressful life events) and sociological (i.e perceived social support) factor.

Method: 846 patients with any thyroid disorders and did not have any psychiatric disorders were recruited from four government hospital on Malaysia. Several tools were used in this study including Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-42 (DASS-42), the list of Life Threatening Experiences (LTE) to identify the stressful life events; Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) to determine the level of perceived social support; while Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and free Thyroxine (fT4) were reviewed from patient’s file.

Results: Age (OR = 1.02; 95% CI = 1.01, 1.04; p = 0.008), stressful life events (OR = 0.65; 95% CI = 0.54, 0.79; p = 0.001) and perceived social support (OR = 1.03; 95% CI = 1.01, 1.05; p = 0.001) were found to have significant association and could be as predictor factors for depression among thyroid disorder patients

Conclusion: These findings could suggest that depression might be happen if the thyroid disorder patients are older people, had recent stressful life events and had low perceived social support. Therefore, this study is useful in providing  information about the predictor factors that may influence depression among thyroid disorder patients, thus early detection and prevention can be initiated to prevent depression among thyroid disorder patients.
