Maritime Culture in the City of Batam, Indonesia: Is it existed?

Abstract


The City of Batam is a small archipelago with three main islands. The majority of the residence are newcomers to the Island of Batam. The objective of this article is to show whether there is any existence of the maritime culture in the City of Batam, what kind of maritime culture if it is existed, and whether  it be considered as a sustainable maritime culture. This article is generated from a research that use qualitative methodology with a case study approach. The results are there is a vague understanding on the form of a maritime culture due to lack of performing arts that cannot be separated from traditional practices, there is some degree of maritime culture in the way of living and development implementation however there are some limitations and it is still cannot be considered as sustainable maritime culture, and there is a need to socialize both modern maritime culture that should be a part of modern maritime infrastructure and inclusive maritime development.
