Abstract

Nutraceutical product is currently in great demand to be consumed on a regular basis. Since the active substances in nutraceutical products are provided by nature, they are safe to consume. The development of dosage form and appearance of modern nutraceutical product can improve the product’s quality. Therefore, this research was aimed to formulate nutraceutical product of mulberry leaves extract into hydrogel beads that swell in water and administrated orally. Deoxynojirimycin, the active substance of mulberry leaves extract hydrogel beads has the efficacy of an antidiabetic agent. In this research, there were four formulations with the variation 1:2 and 1:3 of extract and polymer ratio, and 2,5% and 5% crosslinker’s concentration variation. The results showed hydrogel beads had spherical form with unsmooth surface, brown color, and were able to swell in water. The best formula was formula 1 with 1:2 of extract and polymer ratio and 2,5% of crosslinker’s concentration. Formulation 1 had average diameter 3,6 mm, swelling ability of 210,68%, and immediately swelled in water during 30 seconds. In conclusion, mulberry leaves extract hydrogel beads could be used as an interesting nutraceutical products.
