Abstract

Background: Clitoria Ternatea flowers has anthocyanin, blue coloring substance that has potential as natural coloring.

Objective: The propose of this study was to obtain eyeliner product with nature coloring that safe for user, stable and will be able to replace hazardous chemicals. Material and methods: Clitoria Ternatea flowers extracted by kinetic maceration with 70% ethanol and the produced extract was carried out for standard quality tests, phytochemical screening, anthocyanin total value was measured at l510nm and l700 nm and antioxidant IC50 values (DPPH method). The produced extract was used in eyeliner preparation as nature coloring. Eyeliner was made in three pH variations (acid, neutral and alkali). Those three types of eyeliner preparation were subjected to irritation test on shaved male albino white rabbit skins. Tests performed on eyeliner preparation include stability test with cylcle test method, hardness, break point and melting point of the bulks.

Results: The result showed Clitoria Ternatea extract contains anthocyanin total value (0.2187%), antioxidant activity IC50: 104.7 µg/mL (average activity), free of heavy metal content. The eyeliner preparation with Clitoria ternatea extract gave dark blue color when applied to the skin. There were three variant eyeliner colors which changed while changing the pH of the bulk to acid (violet) and alkali (green). Eyeliner preparations showed stable in three stability cycle tests. The response of irritation test on shaved male albino white rabbit skins showed no irritation the skin.

Conclusion: Accordingly, Clitoria Ternatea extract can be used as natural coloring in eyeliner preparation.
