Characterization of Carboxymethyl Cellulose Hydrogel from Durian (Durio zibethinus L.) Rind

Abstract


Background: Durian (Durio zibethinus L.)  rind are usually left unused. It becomes a distractful waste for people. Recently study shows that durian (Durio zibethinus L.)  rind contain high cellulose. Nowadays, the use of hydrogel in the industry is significantly increased. The latest study present that hydrogel could be synthesized from cellulose. Objective: This study was conducted to synthesis hydrogel from durian (Durio zibethinus L.)  rind and its characterization. Materials and Methods: Cellulose was isolated from durian (Durio zibethinus L.) rind and prepared into NaCMC. Then, NaCMC was synthesized to be hydrogel using citric acid as a crosslinked agent with various concentrations. FTIR and SEM characterization of synthesized hydrogel were determined. Results: Synthesized hydrogel was a thin film. The FTIR peak indicated the presence of ester bonding from anhydride of citric acid with the hydroxyl group of durian cellulose. It demonstrated the crosslink between NaCMC and citric acid were successfully formed. The SEM data provided the information about inner structure of formed hydrogel, also the hydrogel consist the same elements with the durian (Durio zibethinus L.)  rind.  Conclusion: It is concluded that variations in the citric acid concentration of hydrogel synthesis can affect the characteristics of the hydrogel as an excipient in pharmaceuticals industry.
