Abstract


Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) were known to be more effective in extracting plants biomarker compound than organic solvents. In this study, mixtures of choline chloride or betaine with 3 sugar molecules (glycerol, xylitol and sorbitol) and 3 organic acids (lactic acid, citric acid, and malic acid) were used as a solvent to extract trans-cinnamaldehyde and coumarin from cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum burmanii). Optimization of extraction condition to obtain the optimal trans-cinnamaldehyde content was carried out by determaining water addition and extraction time. For comparison, conventional extraction was carried out by maceration, reflux, and soxhlet method using 96% ethanol. Determination of trans-cinnamaldehyde and coumarin contents were evaluated using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results of this study showed that choline chloride-glycerol (1:2) with water addition of 50% and extraction time of 40 minutes produced the highest trans-cinnamaldehyde content which is 9.87 mg/g and coumarin content which is 11.09 mg/g dry weight. Reflux method was conventional extraction that produced the highest trans-cinnamaldehyde content which is 1.47 mg/g and coumarin content which is 3.92 mg/gdry weight.
