Abstract

Cocos nucifera L. extract has not been studied widely for its potency as drug and cosmetic agent. The natural products are expected to be candidate of drug or cosmetics. Kopyor (Cocos nucifera L.) has main component of water and soft flesh. This research investigated benefits of kopyor extract as antimicrobial drug by firstly characterize kopyor extract and evaluate antimicrobial activity. Maceration method was used to extract kopyor. The optimized extraction resulted yield of 23%. Kopyor extract were identified in terms of loss on drying, total ash, acid-insoluble ash, extract content (soluble in water and ethanol), saponification value and moisture content. Antimicrobial test was also conducted. Standardized extract had LOD of 35%, 8.95% of ash, and 31% acid-insoluble ash. Extract content which soluble in water was 56.9%. The saponification value was 47.8 and MC was 6.4%. Kopyor extract contained alkaloids was found in identification by reagent, while the identification of flavonoid compounds showed negative results, but TLC identification was highly recommended. Antimicrobial against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Propionibacterium acnes bacteria showed that extract had potential activity as antimicrobial agent for further formulation.
