Abstract

Background:  Herbal medicine (jamu) is an Indonesian traditional drug that has been used by the community in efforts to overcome health problems. One of the herbs that are frequently used by the public is antihypertensive jamu. The aim of this study was to determine the standardization parameters of 8 antihypertensive jamu in the form specific and non-specific parameters, antioxidant and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) activity. Materials and Methods: Jamu were extracted using ethanol. Non-specific parameters, that are water value, total ash value, acid insoluble ash value, soluble ethanol extract content, water soluble extract content  were determined by gravimetric method and refractory index by refractometer,  coliform determination, Total Plate Number (ALT) with the Standard Plate Count method. Determination of specific parameters including determining of total flavanoids by the Chang method, antioxidant and ACEI activity by spectrophotometry. Results: nonspecific parameter value which is the average water content of 8.5% v / w; total ash content of 36.33% w / w, levels of acid insoluble ash and  soluble ethanol extract content  were 32.4% w/w and 42,4% w/w respectively, water-soluble extract and ethanol soluble following  71.87% w / w and 75.2%, total plate number of 10 colonies / g and coliform contamination was undetected. The specific parameter value is the average of total flavonoids is 4.22 mgQE / g extract, to 8 ethanol extract of antihypertension jamu have antioxidant and  ACE inhibitor activity.

Conclusion: the eight antihypertensive jamu met the standard extract parameters and have potenstial activities as ACE inhibitors
