Abstract

Introduction: Polyscias scutellaria Fosberg is one of the indigenous plants from Indonesia. Traditionally, the leaves of P.scutellaria widely used as folk medicines for several illnesses. Nonetheless, this theory has never been scientifically verified. Methods: This study aimed to evince the antifungal activity of P.scutellaria Fosberg against Candida albicans. The growth of fungi could be inhibited by the presence of antifungal agents. P.scutellaria was extracted using ethanol solvent. The crude extract was dissolved using 1% DMSO because ethanol solvent could potentially as antifungal agents. Fluconazole as a common antifungal treatment was used at the concentration of 100 μg/mL for the positive control. The antifungal activity of P. sculletaria against Candida albicans was tested using dilution, colony-forming unit, and diffusion disc methods. Results: Ethanol extract of P.scutellaria leaves showed antifungal activities against Candida albicans. Based on phytochemical screening results, the leaves extract of P.scutellaria contains saponins. It showed the minimum inhibitory concentration of … μg/mL and formed the inhibitory zone against Candida albicans. Conclusion: As a conclusion, ethanol extract of P.scutellaria has potential to be used as an antifungal agent against Candida albicans.
