Goatskin Gelatin as a Binder in the Formulation of Paracetamol Tablets using the Wet Granulation Method

Abstract


Halal gelatin extracted from goatskin could be used as a new excipient in the pharmaceutical dosage form. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of goatskin gelatin as a binder on paracetamol tablets using the wet granulation method. The concentration of goatskin gelatin used was 2, 3 and 4%. As a comparison, paracetamol tablets were also formulated using bovine gelatin with the same concentration.  The evaluation results show the following data. Weight and size uniformity meet the requirements. Increasing the concentration of goatskin gelatin caused the value of hardness to increase, the disintegration time was longer, and the tablet fragility value decreased (p <0.05). The best tablets were produced with the concentration of goatskin gelatin 3%, with the value of the hardness 15.07 ± 0.67 Kp, disintegration time 3.71 ± 1.00 minutes and friability value 0.62%. Paracetamol levels in the 30th-minute dissolution test were 99.78 ± 0.94%. Paracetamol tablets using goatskin gelatin as a binder had a faster disintegration time and were easier to dissolve than tablets using bovine gelatin (p <0.05). It can be concluded that the goatskin gelatin is very promising as a good binder using the wet granulation method.
