Potency of Laban Bark (Vitex pinnata Linn) as an breast anticancer in reducing breast nodules weight

Abstract


Background : The prevalence of breast cancer is 15% and is one of the causes of death worldwide. The existence of breast cancer is one of them characterized by the presence of nodules (small lumps) which eventually enlarge and attach to the skin causing changes in the skin of the breast or on the nipple. The target of breast cancer treatment includes destroying cancer cells so that the size of the cancer shrinks. Laban bark (Vitex pinnata Linn) contains flavonoids and alkaloids which have the potential to be anticancer.Objective : This study aimed to prove the efficacy of these plants by examining breast nodules weight by the breast cancer model in rat experimentally. Materials and Methods : In this study, induction of breast cancer used 7,12-dimethylbenz (α) antrhacene (DMBA) dose of 20 mg / kg BW given for 5 weeks subcutaneously. Wistar rats that appear breast nodules are divided into 5 groups, namely the negative group (CMC Na suspension 0.5%), positive group (doxorubicin 2.0 µg / kg BW iv), test group I (150 mg/kg BW bark extract per oral ), group II (bark extract 300 mg/kg BW per oral), test group III (bark extract 600 mg/kg BW per oral). Measurements of breast nodules were carried out after 30 days of administration. Results : The results obtained by Laban bark extract (Vitex pinnata Linn) dose of 150 mg/kg BW and 300 mg/kg BW significantly reduced breast nodule weight by 92.32% and 84.08% (p <0.05). Conclusion : Based on the result, Laban bark extract (Vitex pinnata Linn) has activity as an breast anticancer by reducing breast nodules weight.
