From climate change adaptation to maladaption: The transdisciplinary moments with extractive industry in farmers’ agrometeorological learning

Abstract


This paper critically examines of how the Science Field Shops (SFSs) cooperate with the extractive industry to facilitate farmers' agrometeorological learning. Based on an inter- and transdisciplinary approach, the SFSs were introduced in Indramayu Regency, West Java, in 2009. For the first time, in mid-2023, the Corporate Social Responsibility of the state-owned coal power plant supported this initiative. In a situation where multiple agents have contradictory impacts on the environment, we explicitly examine the implications of doing climate change adaptation with farmers and extractive industries that contribute to climate change. We ask: 1) How could the SFSs assist farmers who live in polluted environments caused by agricultural intensification and fossil-based energy producers to better cope with climate change? 2) What transdisciplinary moments reveal about the possibility of knowledge co-production with farmers and extractive industry? We focus on “transdisciplinary moments” to highlight moments of tension and responses of diverse agents on the shifting positionalities and embodied experiences. Examining these moments is significant to understanding how researchers navigate the politics of knowledge and maladaptation in transdisciplinary collaboration with multiple agents who have different objectives and interests, social-cultural backgrounds, and are embedded in power relations. The paper examines moments of tension between the approaches of SFS and CSR-PLTU to climate change adaptation which we argued was enabled by the proliferation of multistakeholder engagement in global climate change governance, and tensions that arise when SFSs meet with local politics during its implementation. As a conclusion, we shift the conversation from how extractive industries contribute to climate change adaptation through multistakeholder engagement to how they take part in maladaptation through the same networks and power relations.
