Abstract

Being a natural commodity, copra is influenced by and influencing its social-ecological condition. Copra is intertwined with the space-time under which it is produced. It is useful to understood copra as a power as laid out by Rudyansjah (2009): never performed in its finality but always processed in a historical space-time. Copra, as a natural commodity, blends and intertwines within the realm of traditional and capitalist economy. To understand copra, we can’t read it through the lens of economic dualism as theorized by Boeke (1982, Moeljanto: 2009), nor through Geertz’s (1983, Moeljanto: 2009).
