Abstract

This article examines about the study of the expressions and emotions of Madurese as part of the Austronesian language. This article was based on my curiosity about whether an emotion that the Madurese wants to convey through their language expressions has something in common with other Austronesian languages, both from the form of words and the expression of cultural patterns that represent certain things. In the discussion of the study of expressions of emotion in the Madurese language, I only focus on the word ‘shame’ (malu), todus (in Madurese); ‘fear’ (takut), tako' (in Madurese); ‘anger’ (marah), pegghel (in Madurese); and ‘love’ (cinta), lebur/terro/neser/estoh (in Madurese).

There are several words which have similar basic words in Madurese language. However, there are different functions in expressing the words according to the area in which the people live, whether it is in the plain, the coast, the islands, or districts. So far, there is not any standard Madura dictionary has ever been written by the Madurese themselves. Instead, you will find essays of the Madura-Indonesian language dictionary that are very diverse both in meaning and form of words according to where the author was born; whether they were born in Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, or Sumenep. In this paper, I discussed about the literal and philosophical meanings of several words in the Madurese language related with the expressions of shame, fear, anger, and love.
