Abstract

This study focuses on understanding the desire and thought of the Papuan young generation to struggle for the self-liberation and self-sovereignty. This social movement for Papua’s liberation is a long history of some people’s wish to criticize the domination of the authoritarian power of the Indonesian State. The continuing power circle causes the Papuan people to be cynical and creates negative stigmas towards security apparatuses. The role of the Papuan young generation is very vital given the fusion of KNPB (West Papuan National Committee), one of the organizations whose mass supporters are mostly Papuan university students and young people. KNPB intensively takes actions and mobilizes the mass in nearly all towns in Papua. Their actions have always been met with repressive reactions by security apparatuses. KNPB’s actions always demand the uncovering of violence and killings towards the Papuan people and the materialization of a referendum. Besides KNPB, the young generation’s political movement is seedled through the emergence of young writers and journalists who have initiated independent news portals. One of the prominent ones is suarapapua.com. This study uses two cases on KPNB’s movement and suarapapua.com to reflect on the imagination of Papua in the future. Papuan young generation’s movement is an important issue for understanding the contemporary Indonesian dynamics from the eastern corner of this country.
