Abstract

Solo has a long history of violence against Chinese. Such violence has taken place due to negative perceptions of them. These perceptions have rarely been studied by scholars. Therefore, this paper tries to find out how the negative perceptions of the Chinese first appeared and how they have led to racial violence in form of riots. It will focus on the riots that happened in 1980 and 1998. The paper also aims to answer how the perception could be changed in regard to avoiding similar violence in the future. By using historical methods, the paper posits that the Chinese had been constructed as an outsider by the ruling power. This has caused them to become a target of diversion and a scapegoat for political and economical pressure. The paper recommends to reconstruct collective memory on Chinese by re-write their history as the way to fix the problem.
