This article examined that supernatural rituals are not only being required or obtained from the whisper of the deities or the order of the spirit, but also being influenced by people. Some rituals seemed to be relevant with the major activities, patterns of behavior, and ecological factors that support the activity of farming.

Rice planting ritual (mappalili) led by the priest, Bissu, were always important for Segeri community. On the basis of belief, the ritual is impactful to make fertility and abundance of crops. Bissu, then, made this ritual as he recognized the needs of the people to relate to nature and also to legitimate his position. Bissu as an intermediary actor works for two different realms—the realm of God and the realm of human beings—then also become the messenger of truth to give balances in life. In the midst of the increasingly strong praxis of formal religion, this article shows how the Segeri community compromised the rice planting ritual as a hereditary tradition inherited form their ancestors and also as a thanksgiving for the good life that has been given by the God.
