Abstract

Airbnb is an online community marketplace previously been known as a platform to rent out accomodations, using sharing economy as the base of its operation. They recently added new features called ‘Experience, which helps travelers to find activities that are unique to a place, promising to give the travelers an authentic taste of the culture. Most of the activities offered were very personal, varies and are mostly differ with the kind of activities that tourist spent while having holidays, therefore targeting a quite specific market while staying true to their claim that only the host of the said activities can provide such ‘experience’.

The new and exciting feature provides a scene in which both host and guest can interact in the so called experience-based tourism. This approach of tourism has been said to be the alternative to mass tourism, providing guest with activities that enables them to create an experience from their visit to the destination. Contrary to mass tourism that had been said to ‘destroy’ or ‘degrade’ local resource due to the intensive exploitation, Airbnb Experience offers activities that are considered in line with sustainability, especially by placing the value of the activities in the individual host.
