Abstract

The creative process of Indonesian choreographers: cultural dependence on creating dance with foreign choreographers

Choreographers have the opportunity to interact with various artists from various countries. This opportunity was obtained when he had the opportunity to display dance work in international forums where on this occasion gathered artists from various countries. Through these meetings mutual influence affects the process of creating dance. The impact of this interaction process raises imitation in the process of creating dance. The method of creating western dance generally relies on physical skills from various benefits which are carried out as material for dance creation. This method is substantially different from the method of creating Indonesian choreographer dance that relies on spiritual strength from symbolic values. This phenomenon resulted in the emergence of the mainstream of the dance creation methods of Indonesian choreographers who tended to be oriented towards the pattern of dance creation from foreign choreographers. Taking the case of the Reyog Ponorogo national festival model, this study examines how the choreographers applied the stages of the creative process in the creation of Reyog Ponorogo performing arts, where they sought to display innovation and creativity to win the competition. This competition converges on dance models that are arranged through a series of creative processes based on the creative methods of modern dance figures. Modern dance figures such as J. Smith, Alma. M. Hawkins, Doris Humphrey became the center of orientation in their creative process. This high dependence on the creativity models of foreign artists resulted in the disappearance of the characteristics of local dance works, because local artists shifted orientation in the creative process of art.
