Abstract


This paper explains the role of the Serawai tradition of seni dendang in the traditional ceremony of nundang padi (inviting seeds), in Selali Village, Pino Raya, South Bengkulu. This tradition of nundang padi is a ceremony that invites seeds before they start the rice-planting period of the Serawai ethnic group in Selali Village, Pino Raya, South Bengkulu District. This research is based on fieldwork involving observation, interviews and documentation. This research unfolds that the tradition of seni dendang serawai is to be performed in nocturnal activities at the village traditional hall where the nundang padi ceremony takes place. The performance is scheduled after the evening prayer and it lasts nearing the dawn prayer. This performance involves men on a prepared stage and is accompanied by instruments like tambourine and violin. The pantoums are recited in reciprocity and the dance is performed according to the pantoums being sung. The players recite the pantoums and dance alternately. The art of dendang is one of the main traditions at the ceremony of nundang padi functioning as the relation of cosmos, kinship and memory.
