Abstract

The Sidikalang Subdistrict is famous for its Sidikalang Robusta Coffee, renowned both locally and internationally. Sidikalang Robusta Coffee has a profit difference for every actor of production and coffee productivity has been one of the centers of attention in increasing regional income. The objective of this research is to identify the value chain pattern of Sidikalang Coffee in the Sidikalang Subdistrict, Dairi Regency as well as the actors inside it. The data collection method used is thorough interview, observation, documentation, and literature study with analytical descriptive qualitative method as well as spatial. Results of this research shows that there are three value chain knots in the production of Sidikalang Coffee, which are the agricultural activities performed by the farmer and farmer groups, the distribution knot performed by the collectors and merchants, and the seed processing and export knot performed by the processing and export factory. Every knot performs a value activity, which are a main and supporting activity that would produce value with a value difference present in every knot. Location affects how an actor in every knot performs their activity regarding the means of transportation as well as the kinship system of the Pakpak Tribe. Two value chain patterns emerge in the production of Sidikalang Coffee, which are Farmer-Collector-Merchant-Processing and Export Factory; and Farmer-Processing and Export Factory. This difference in patterns is caused by the difference in production numbers and the farmer’s land area in the Sidikalang Subdistrict. There are two methods of acquiring land used by every actor, which are by inheritance or by purchase involving the Sulang Silima Merga Pakpak Instution as the institution that holds power and authority regarding the procurement and authorization of land in the Sidikalang Subdistrict.
