Post Covid-19 Pandemic on Youth in the Labor Market in Yogyakarta Province: Perspective Youth Geography

Abstract


From a geographical perspective, work on youth has grown. Several studies discuss youth identity and youth migration, including those related to work. The existence of Covid-19 has had an impact on youth, one of which is related to employment. The unemployment rate has increased in all age groups and the biggest impact is that the largest increase in unemployment occurred in the youth age group. The unemployment rate for the youth population was 17.66% in February 2021, an increase of 3.36% compared to the previous period. the same in 2020 by 14.3%. The increase in unemployment rate in this age group is the largest compared to other age groups. This study aims to study the characteristics of youth before and during Covid-19, how are the opportunities for youth in the market in the Yogyakarta Province. This study uses raw data of Sakernas t2019-2021. Descriptive analysis is used to explain the situation of youth in the labor market including their distribution by district. This study found that during the pandemic many youths entered the job market in the Yogyakarta Province which saw an increase in youth labor force participation rate (LFPR) but on the other hand the youth unemployment rate also increased during the pandemic from 11.06% in 2019 to 12.85% in 2020 and 11.71% in 2021. This increase is highest in the City of Yogyakarta, from 18.3% in 2019 to 20.4 in 2021.
