Festival Bumi Khatulistiwa: Cultural Potential of West Kalimantan

Abstract
The festival Budaya Bumi Khatulistiwa is a sequence of cultural arts performances that only occur in the areas that cross the equator. This festival is being held twice a year, precisely in March and September on 21-23, with some several dance performances from three indigenous tribes of West Kalimantan: Dayak ethnic, Malay and Chinese. This event is being held in Pontianak City, in the Tugu Khatulistiwa. It because the phenomenon of sun culmination can be directly seen around it. The purpose of this study is to find about what and how the cultural festival is. This study used qualitative descriptive with observation, interviews, and literature study as data collection. This study showed that this festival is study of cultural potential which is only owned by the West Kalimantan because of the astronomical location. Astronomically, it’s located at 2006'NL-3005'NL and 1080-1140EL. It causes some areas have exactly at point 00NL in a certain times (March 21-23 and September 21-23) cannot be seen with its own shadow. It happens because the position of the sun is at the highest point above the sky in the equator region. It causes the objects around the equator cannot be seen with its shadow.
