Abstract

Eye movements do not only reflect what we are attending and perceiving, but also reflect our attitude, emotion, as well as thought processes. However, the link between eyes gaze and decision making is not well explored. The purpose of the present study is to examine the relationship between eyes and rational decision making. Two experiments were done to see how eyes help/influence in taking our day-to-day decisions. The first experiment was done on 40 university students (20 males, 20 females, mean age= 22.23). In the second experiment, data were collected on 39 university students (15 males, 24 females, mean age= 22). The task in both the experiments was to select the three food items from the given choices in three different slides. In beginning, they see a matrix containing information regarding price, variety, health and customer rating. They need to select one, among the listed four items. After that, they see the image of the items and then they can change if they want their decision. The second experiment was done with some minor changes in the earlier design, such as exclusion of price, values given in terms of rating, etc. Results explore what they look, how much time they spend on various attribute and items, and whether they changed their decision or not. Results from both the experiments provideĀ a very significant impact of the time spent on various choices and decision taken. Individuals spend significantly higher time on their selected items in both information and image case. The study also depicts individual differences in decision making and that people take their decision on the basis of what is more important to them. Also, individuals generally spend more time in their first order than subsequent orders. Results suggest that eye movement are rational and fixate more on important information/items.
