Developing of Executive Function Rating Scale in Indonesia: Item Discrimination and Reliability Coefficients
Last modified: 2018-08-11
Abstract
The use of valid and reliable psychological tests in practice is an important issue especially with regard to decision making for diagnoses and making programs. In children, one of the most important psychological tests is to measure executive function. The executive function is a set of high-level cognitive abilities that control and regulate functions and behaviors, involving capabilities such as selective information processing in the environment, making plans by choosing the right sequence of actions to achieve a goal, refraining from responding to a stimulus, adapting on changing circumstances and environments, solving problems and self-evaluating. In general, psychological tests of executive functional diseases are reserved for children with special conditions, so there is no valid and reliable psychological test that can be used for normal children. This study aims to develop tests that measure executive function, and can help parents, teachers, and practitioners to perform executive function assessment in children aged 5-10 years, so as to provide appropriate interventions, especially in the learning setting. This study uses the Executive Function Rating Scale (EFFRS). Executive Function Rating Scale (EFRS) is the only psychological test that aims to measure executive function skills in Indonesia. Measuring two dimensions are: cognitive and behavioral. The cognitive dimension consists of: Working memory, planning / priority, organization, time management, metacognition. While the behavioral dimension consists of: emotional control, sustained attention, task initiation, goal-directed persistence, flexibility, inhibition response. The proposed hypothesis the higher the discriminatory power and reliability of the Executive Function Rating Scale (EFRS), the more it can be used as a guide for making intervention programs for children in the learning setting. The method used in this research uses a quantitative approach to look at the different aitems and reliability of the Executive Function Rating Scale (EFRS) using Spearman-Brown analysis technique and reliability using the coefficient of Executive Function Rating Scale (EFRS). The Executive Function Rating Scale (EFRS) was awarded to 169 children (84 men and 85 women), ranging from 5 to 10 years old, divided into five age groups: 1) 5.0 - 5.11 years, 2) 6.0 - 6.11 year, 3) 7.0 - 7.11 years, 4) 8.0 - 8.11 years and 5) 9.0 - 9.11 years. The EFRS scale is given to the teacher to be completed in accordance with the child's development. There are 22 items of Executive Function Rating Scale (EFFRS) selected by the judgment expert then used to this research. From the analysis results obtained discrimination aitem power is on the vulnerability of 0,5 - 0,8 which means the scale has good quality. While for the coefficients reliability of EFRS of 0.92 - 0.97 which means having a high consistency (≥ 0.8). Based on the results of the analysis, the Executive Function Rating Scale (EFRS) can be used by parents, teachers, practitioners and clinicians to identify the executive function of the child and help to developing executive fungtion children.
