Last modified: 2018-08-10
Abstract
Edgeworth asserted that economic agents’ decision are driven by their self-interest, but in many cases human may act beyond such interest and shows altruistic attitudes, particularly giving donation which is advocated by almost all religion. This research aims to investigate the influence of religiosity on donation behavior. To elucidate people’s altruism, an effort has been made to conduct a real-laboratory experiment of dictator game, involving 198 participants which were divided in 6 classrooms. We measured participants’ religiosity by widely-used indicators which involve several dimensions, including Organizational Religious Activity (ORA), Non-Organizational Religious Activity (NORA), and Intrinsic Religiosity (IR). All data collected were processed using ordinary least square regression. The results show that all dimensions of religiosity have a significant positive effect on donating behavior. The adherents of Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism tend to trust their donation to religion-related institutions, whereas Hindus have the same preference between religious and social institutions. The remaining classifications, Atheists and Agnostics are more likely to split their money for non-religious institution.
