Relationship Between Psychological Well Being and College Students’ Problem

Abstract


Background Ten years lately, several studies have been investigated Indonesian college students’ problem. Students’ problem was found on low academic grade, and students with learning difficulties. The problems were varied from social problem, future employment, family problem, and personal problem. Early identification is an important step to prevent students from having more severe problem that would affect academic performance. Hence, finding factors could be used as  resources to help students cope with their problem is more important. Psychological well being was found could be a potential resource to excel life problem, such as adult transition life, health problem, and work problem. People who has high psychological well being possess a positive attitude toward self, satisfying relationship with others, able to regulates behaviors from within, has a sense of mastery and competence managing the environment, has goals in life, and open to new experiences tend to has lower chances to relapse from psychological disorder.

 

Methods The participants consisted of almost all master students in Faculty of Psychology of Universitas Padjadjaran, as many as 144 students (76 %), agreed to participate in classroom data collection. Two self-report questionnaire were used in this study. Mooney Problem Checklist was used to identify students’ problem area. There are 11 problem areas measured by Mooney Problem Checklist, those problem are (1) health and physical development, (2) finance, living condition and employment, (3) social and recreational activities, (4) social-psychological relations, (5) personal-psychological relations, (6) courtship, sex, and marriage, (7) home and family, (8) morals and religion, (9) adjustment to college or school work, (10) the future: vocational and education, (11) curriculum and teaching procedures. Psychological Well Being Short Form (42 items) used as a measure of potential resources, consist of six dimensions: autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relation, purpose in life, self-acceptance. Statistical analysis using independent t-test was employed to investigate the relationship between students’ psychological well being and students’ problem area. Each of participants was categorized into high and low psychological well  being to examine differencess on each students’ problem area.

 

Result The result showed that students experienced more (1) social and recreational activities, (2) personal-psychological relations, and (3) adjustment to college or school work (6.11, 6.68, 7.09) problem compared to other problem area. While, almost all problem had different level of psychological well being (Cohen’s d ranged from .34 to 1.44). Only finance, living condition and employment had no differences on psychological well being level. Based on psychological well being dimension level, differences on environmental mastery and self acceptance were found on 10 from 11 problem area, except on finance, living condition and employment. The effect size were ranged from small to large. The highest was self acceptance on social-psychological relations (Cohen’s d 1.04)

 

Conclusion Students who possesed a positive attitude toward self and had a sense of mastery and competence managing the environment, has significant differences on number of problem reported. Those students tend to have less problem compared to those who has lower self acceptence and environmental mastery. Therefore, intervention related to developing positive attitude toward self, and mastery and competence managing the environment could be used to prevent students from having more problems.

Added-values Meanwhile, for practical benefit, focus on positive attitude toward self, and mastery and competence managing the environment could be used a basic framework on students’ orientation proccess.

Contribution to society A person who has high psychological well being and less problem could contribute more to the environment and society. Those who has high psychological well being tend to participate more on volunteer work, and on religious participation.
