Abstract

Jakarta has to face the increasing number of poor community with its characteristics such as poor sanitation, lack of education, and lack of awareness on health and hygiene which may lead to upcoming issues in the inhabitants' quality of life and health status. According from Badan Pusat Statistik (2016), East Jakarta is the largest administrative city in DKI Jakarta with an area of 188.03 km2 and the largest population with the number 2,868, 910 people. The population is very stout to make the waste produced every day to reach 1.920 tons . In addition, East Jakarta is also the city with the most number of homes that have unhealthy requirements (Dinas Kesehatan, 2016). While the health-promoting behavior campaign from the government has planned and implemented, the residents' should be empowered to support the campaign with improving their awareness. Studies suggest hardiness as a dispositional construct predicts high health-promoting behavior (HPB). However, the impact may differ in the slum area, since facilities and access to improve and maintain health behavior is limited. This study aiming to study mediating effect of optimism on the relationship between hardiness and health-promoting behavior. The data obtained by a survey administered to 150 inhabitants of South Jakarta poor community aged 18-29 (M= 28, F= 122) with purposive sampling technique, and analyzed using Hayes' PROCESS macro in SPSS. The results showed that HPB positively correlated to hardiness, hardiness positively correlated to optimism, and optimism positively correlated to HPB. Results also showed that optimism mediated the relationship between hardiness and HPB. This implies that optimism may be manifested as an intervention method along with HPB intervention to increase the level of HPB in the poor community.
