Abstract

This study is the first step to understand the concept of tatur. Tatur is a concept in Javanese society that deals with the discipline of defecation and urination in children. The concept is slowly faded from the Javanese society, along with the increasing use of disposable diapers in children and the elderly. Increased use of disposable diapers and then impact on increasing waste in land and in water. This is of course affect the health of the people living around. One of the findings of the cause of the community around the Brantas river flow of baby and adult diapers into the river is the process of discipline of defecation and urination that retreats and tends not to be emphasized by families in children or the elderly. This situation encourages authors to conduct a deep and scientific search of Tatur. The purpose of this preliminary study was to obtain more empirical and complete data on Tatur. Author is expected with deep and complete data, Tatur can be reintroduced to suppress disposable diaper waste. This study was conducted by using qualitative descriptive ethnographic approach. The data collection process begins with a study of literature and studies on Javanese artifacts. The literature study was carried out on a document in the form of a book on parenting patterns in Javanese, previous research on parenting patterns in Java, as well as books on understanding Javanese parents about parenting. Study on artifacts is done by studying temples, statues of Java as well as the ruins of palace buildings associated with self-cleaning for children and adults. After that, data was collected by observing daily life and semi-structured interviews on 10 native Java families (3 families from Madiun, East Java, 4 families from Semarang, Central Java and 3 from Yogyakarta families) who were familiar with the concept of tatur. Observations and interviews were conducted by looking at data from literature studies. Then, semi-structured interviews were also conducted on 3 Javanese cultural experts, 2 psychologists who pursue child care. The data obtained then analyzed by conducting content and thematic analysis. Triangulation process to see the consistency and validity of data is done by comparing the data taken through literature study, interview and observation with data from expert psychology and Javanese culture. The study of literature shows that the concept of tatur was recorded in the 1936 Java dictionary written by Poerwadarminta. The concept of tatur is described as "menatur" the baby to defecate and urinate. Some of the Javanese literature published before 1936 and in the same year also indicates a description of the disposal discipline of children and adults but does not mention the name of the process. If traced to the study of artifacts, then the process of self-cleaning, organ organs including genitalia has been present in some temples and ruins palace location. According to Javanese cultural experts, the concept of tatur already exists in daily activities before 1936, but has not received more attention so as not to get a clear picture of the tatur and the process. The tatur process was then obtained when observing and interviewing Javanese families. All Javanese families state that tatur is the activity of getting a child to urinate and defacte at certain times. The tatur process is tilting the child so they can take out the urine after it cleans it. Age about 3 to 6 months. After that the child is taught to urinate in the bath room. Some respondents also stated that they felt the impact with the existence of the tatur. When the age of 4 - 10 years old children are used to toilet, like cleanliness and, obey and more confident when playing. This is similar with the statement of Javanese cultural experts. They also added that there is an indication that this concept is also intended for elderly or adults. Discussions with child psychologists also show that tatur can be associated with toilet training in psychoanalysis, but this needs to be further explored. This study still needs to deepen in study of literature on the parenting and adult literature existing in the palace and interviews on palace courtiers who understand the care of children and adults.
