Abstract

This study is conducted to investigate the roles and contributions of Industrial and Organizational (I/O) psychologists as academicians in Malaysia. This study adopts the 16 Multi-Dimensional Conceptual Framework introduced by Barnard and Fourie (2007) on the indicator to measure the roles and contributions of I/O psychologists. Semi-structured interview has been carried out among ten I/O psychologists as academicians in both public and private universities in Malaysia using 31 interview questions developed based on 16 Multi-Dimensional Conceptual Framework. The data from the interview then was analyzed using content analysis. The results showed that I/O psychologists as academicians in Malaysia are contributing in only 10 of the dimensions. Overall finding indicate that the academicians are given less opportunities to get involved in other areas in the university except for teaching. There are no legal bodies for Industrial Psychology in Malaysia that will bring issues and problems related to I/O psychology in Malaysia that lead Malaysian’s organizations having unclear understanding of I/O psychologist’s roles and contributions.
