Abstract

Indonesia has so many environmental problems, pollution of water and air, and management of waste are not sufficient, it is a terrible threat to public health. Destruction of forest environments is also a big problem causing many natural disasters. These environmental problems are important issues of Indonesia that must be solved.                 One long term way to solve these problems is by conducting environmental education as early as possible, even better if it can be done since kindergarten. But In Indonesian education system, environmental education is still not available. In Japan, there is a subject called “living Environmental Study” in which there is a unit that is called “Playing with Nature”. This unit is suitable to be conducted in Indonesian kindergarten within certain limitation. Researcher thought this method can be used to construct environmental education curriculum for kindergarten in Indonesia.

At first, researcher conducted literature study about environmental education in “Living Environmental Study”, environmental education in kindergarten in Japan,  and “playing with nature” that has been conducted in Japan for 20 years, also kindergarten system in Indonesia. Afterward, researcher observed environmental education at Japanese kindergarten and observed the implementation of “playing with nature” at 1st grade of Uechi elementary school placed in Okazaki city, Japan. And to get more understanding about the implementation of Indonesian kindergarten system, researcher observed Budi Pangerti kindergarten in South Jakarta.

From literature study, researcher looked for similarity between environmental education in kindergarten, environmental education in “Living environmental Study” and also “Playing with nature”, and found that there are 6 points are similar. First, children have contact with nature around them, second, children use nature, third, children aware of the wonder of nature, fourth, children feel enjoy playing, fifth, children master how to make a toy from nature, and finally, children master how to play with the toy.

After analyzing the results’ observation of the implementation of “Playing with Nature” in Uechi elementary school and the implementation of Indonesia kindergarten system in Budi Pangerti Kindergarten, and also based on 6 points above, researcher designed the environmental curriculum for Indonesian Kindergarten. Curriculum that formed in outline is as follows, first, being friends with nature, which is divided into; looking for natural object in the park/forest, going to the park, coming and playing with natural object, making a mask and a crown from natural object. Second, planting shoes flower (hibiscus rosa) and coloring the water with shoes flower. Third, being friend with rain. The last one is being friend with natural object, which is divided into, making cloths from natural object, arranging a fashion show, making toys that you like from natural object, and playing together with father and mother with the toys.
