Abstract

Background. Religions are often blamed as the root of chaos in the world. A peaceful life which has been desired by the global society is even considered by extremists as a dream which could only be realized if everyone converted into one single religion. Indonesia, as one of the most diverse countries in the world, home to various ethnics, languages, and also religions, has been facing an increasing risk of conflicts. While the founding father has created the tenet, “Bhineka Tunggal Ika” – meaning as unity in diversity – its effectiveness in creating unity in the country is still questionable. Is religion the only important factor which plays its part in hindering the unification or is there another factor which significantly contributes to the tolerance within this nation?

Methods. This study is aimed to investigate the role of intellectual humility, and multicultural ideology toward ethnic and religious tolerance. 300 participants will be invited to fill four set of questionnaires either through online or offline platform, i.e. Comprehensive Intellectual Humility Scale, Multicultural Ideology Scale, Ethnic Tolerance Scale, and Religious Tolerance Scale. Linear multiple regression analysis will be used to predict the most influencing factor on religious tolerance. Additional analysis by religion and cultural background will be applied to investigate further the degree of tolerance among different group of religion and culture.

Added-Values. The result of this study could be used as a reference for stakeholders to develop any kind of social intervention which targeting on intellectual humility and ideology. We expect that the research findings would be very useful for national deradicalization programme and could initiate other studies in this domain.
