A Conducive Academic Atmosphere for Practical Learning in the Nursing Laboratory

Abstract

Introduction: Laboratory practice is a learning strategy that is used to teach psychomotor abilities (skills), knowledge, and affective (attitudes) all together that use laboratory facilities. Preparing the conducive learning environments and atmospheres is important for students in improving their clinical abilities. The aim of this study is to explore the nursing students experiences and to find out what problems they face in implementing practice in nursing laboratories. This study is a qualitative study with descriptive phenomenology method.

Method: The study was conducted in Jakarta and Bogor in two nursing diploma education institutions. The research sample consisted of eight students from the second and third grade who had undergone laboratory practices. Analysis and process of this qualitative data used Nvivo version 12 plus software.

Results: The results of the study obtained 4 themes, namely: 1) the role and characteristics of the supervisor, 2) preparation before practice, 3) management of pre-learning learning in the laboratory, 4) facilities and infrastructure. In the implementation of nursing laboratory practices, a conducive academic atmosphere or learning atmosphere is required such as the instructor who understands their roles and responsibilities, student readiness, good management and also the equipped laboratory facilities for the expected competencies achieved.

Conclusion: The achievement of students' skills in learning in the laboratory can be obtained if the support of the learning atmosphere in the nursing laboratory is conducive
