Parents Experiences In Caring Children With Pneumonia In Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU): A Review

Abstract


ABSTRACT

Introduction: Pneumonia is the most frequent respiratory illness that cause hospitalization among young children in worldwide. However the experiences of parents caring for children with pneumonia in PICU is not well described in Malaysian context

 

Purpose: To identify the available literature on parents experiences in caring children with pneumonia in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

 

Design: A literature review.

 

Data sources: Five online databases namely CINAHL, Science Direct, Proquest, Cochrane and Pubmed were searched.

 

Review methods: Relevant studies were identified using electronic database search.

 

Result: Twenty-two papers met the inclusion criteria. Further review of these articles resulted in summarized topics— experiences of parents in PICU, technology in PICU, parental stressors and parent’s needs.

 

Conclusion: Exploration of the experiences of Malaysian parents of children with pneumonia caring the children in Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) will provide comprehension and assessment of their knowledge on pneumonia as well as provide insight of the challenges in caring these children to provide holistic care.
