Abstract

Peripheral intravenous might lead to some risks and complications in low birth weight babies (LBWB). The numbers of phlebitis incidences in LBWB indicated varied percentages. This study aimed to analyze the causative factors of phlebitis in LBWB in perinatology. The design of this study was cross sectional and involving 106 LBWBs who fitted the inclusion criteria. The samples were selected by using consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected since the LBWB started to receive infusion until it was stopped under certain condition. The instruments used were INS phlebitis scale and Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS). The variables related to phlebitis under bivariate analysis were including clinical experience of intravenous insertion < 2 years (0.015), did not use infusion pumps (p=0.037), site of insertion (p=0.014), neonates birth weight (p=0.037), and the administration of Total Parenteral Nutrition (p=0.006). Multivariate analysis showed that the most common risk factor of phlebitis was the clinical experience of intravenous insertion < 2 years, therefore such condition needs to be considered in order to improve the quality of nursing care in perinatology.
