Abstract

Adolescent girls in Indonesia face complex problems. In 2015 alone, 11.21% of this population were pressed into early marriage, some gave birth at the ages of 15 to 19, and the incidence of first pregnancies among them increased from 8.5% to 9.5%. These conditions have been linked to maternal death. In consideration of these issues, this mixed methods study explored the perceptions and needs of adolescent girls in maintaining reproductive health. Randomly selected participants from three schools in Bogor, West Java completed a structured reproductive health questionnaire (n=321) and participated in focus group discussion from 12 adolescent girls, 5 parents and 3 teacher (n=20). The quantitative results showed that 81.9% of the adolescent girls had low knowledge of the reproductive system, 16.8% were agreeable to sexual relations before marriage, and 92.5% exhibited negative attitudes toward unwanted pregnancy, indicating intent to engage in health-endangering acts, such as abortion. Qualitative analysis is carried out with seven themes that explain that adolescent girls have a very important understanding, they want information   that is accurate and easily accessible, and can help in problems solving experienced. These findings highlight the necessity of reproductive health education, youth-friendly services, and communication media that are accessible anytime, anywhere.

Keywords: adolescent girls, reproductive health.
