Abstract

Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from insuficiency insulin. The issue of controlling blood glucose still problematic among patients with type 2 diabetes. Acupressure is useful in reducing blood glucose levels by expediting the circulation of qi (vital energy) in the body. However limited study had examined the effect of acupressure to reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This quasi experimental trial was conducted to identify the effect of acupressure on blood glucose level in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Purposive samples of 32 patients were enrolled. They were divided into intervention (n = 16) and control group (n = 16). Paired t-test have been used to examine the effectiveness of acupressure before and after intervention. The results showed a significant difference in blood glucose levels between the intervention group and the control group (t = 4.22; p = 0.001). Acupressure is an effective intervention to reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Acupressure can be recommended as one of the independent complementary therapies in nursing care among patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
