Abstract
The special objective and target of this research is to find the sustainable social movement for strengthening local community participation on environmental conservation. The first target is to explain phenomenological world of actors, to understand their consciousness flows and to explain their local participation. This research is a qualitative research method with phenomenological approach. The techniques of data collection are deep interview, observation, study of archives, and Focus Group Discussion.
Its results state that the two movements are Tandur Banyu dan Festival Brantas. Tandur Banyu is a movement initiated by the youths of Junrejo village with focus in water resources conservation, forestation and rivers cleaning. Festival Brantas is a movement of protection of water resource initiated by youths of Sisir ward, Batu city and concerns on river appreciation and protection, garbage management, also disaster mitigation.
Both movements are emerged due to the actors’ threat perception toward the low quality of environment. As a part of perception, knowledge is resulted by interpretation toward the changes of environment. Unfortunately, this worse condition had never been considered by main related stakeholders. Consequently, actors initiated many environmental activities with empowering local cultures.
The activities, targets and model of social movements are determined by actors who are the youths that close to surrounding environment, possessing good education (mostly studied in undergraduate level) as well as activists with wider social network ini city. Although the movement still leave some shortcomings like the up and down participation, avoiding crucial issues like the change of lands by investors, this social movement is an appropriate model of conservation in Batu city.
