Abstract
The role of archives goes along with human civilization. But, the concept of archives has undergone evolution in response to changing political, social, and economic ideologies and institution. Anyhow, the basic concept remained unchanged from the earliest civilization until the end of twenty century. Archives are being preserved for the reason to establish and protect the rights and interests of the sovereign. It is not really happened with to paper based archives of China since eighteenth century China dynasty. The method of document analysis is conducted to have comprehensive understanding about how the Chinese see their archives. From books and journals on Chinese archives show that archives for Chinese are government or dynasty sovereign. The evolutionary process has determined that changes of dynasty in the political, economic, social have become the changes of the archives. Every time, the dynasty established its own archive, did not preserve the archives of the late dynasty in order to diminish the trace of previous dynasty sovereign. The range of documentary materials were kept safely in local archives remained fairly constant.
