Abstract
Garcinia daedalanthera is one of Clusiaceae plants that have been scientifically proven to provide as antidiabetic and antioxidant activity. This study was to evaluate the safety Garcinia daedalanthera extract through in vivo test of the acute toxicity using experimental animals mice DDY strain and Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) using Artemia salina Leach larva shrimp. Acute toxicity test of Garcinia daedalanthera extract was studied in male and female mice by giving a single orally administered dose at levels of 5;50;500;5,000 mg/kg and analyzed by consumption of water and food, body weight, mortality for 14 days. The result showed no mortality in mice or any signs of toxicity. The acute toxicity (LD50) was estimated to be > 5000 mg/kg body weight. The BSLT result showed that the LC50 values of Garcinia daedalantheraextract was 435.75 ppm. The result indicates that the oral administration of Garcinia daedalanthera extract did not produce any significant toxic effect in DDY mice. Hence, the extract can be utilized safely for therapeutic use in pharmaceutical formulations.
