Abstract

The present study was designated to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of hexane, ethyl acetat, and methanol extracts from stem bark of Garcinia latissima Miq. The Garcinia latissima Miq. was collected from Bogor. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts against bacteria and fungi were tested by using both microdilution assay. The ethyl acetat extracts of stem bark were active against the gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and the gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeroginosa, and virtually inactive against the gram negative-bacteria Escherichia coli and the fungi Candida albicans. The methanol extracts of stem bark were active against the gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus, and virtually inactive against the gram negative-bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeroginosa and the fungi Candida albicans. The hexane extracts of stem bark were inactive against the gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus and the gram negative-bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeroginosa and the fungi Candida albicans. The ethyl acetat extracts showed higher anti gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis as compared to methanol extracts. The extract of Garcinia latissima Miq. stem bark (Dolo magota) showed the strongest antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis. The result of antimicrobial activity suggested that latisxanton A, latisxanton B, latisxanton C and latisxanton D in the extract of Garcinia latissima Miq. caused the potent antimicrobial activity.
