Abstract
Caffeine has many functions. One of the function is applied as cosmetics. Nonetheless, percutant absorption of caffeine is very low (9 %) and caffeine is not a good substance when penetrating into the skin because it is a hidrophilic compound with a log P of -0,07. Ethosomes and dmsosomes are lipid vesicles created from modification of liposomes containing phospholipids and ethanol or dimethyl sulfoxide as the penetration enhancer. Ethosomes can increases permeation, has a small sized vesicle compared to conventional liposomes, and have many research, so ethosom chosen as the standard. Dmsosoms are considered a new vesicle and only few research are available about this vesicle, therefore they were chosen. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectivity of ethosomes and dmsosomes as a vesicle to increase penetration of caffeine. Thin-filmed method is used to make the ethosomes dan dmsosoms. Based on this research, ethosomes have better characteristics compared to dmsosoms. The cumulative penetration of caffeine ethosome gel is 3316.46 ± 218.51 μg/cm2, with flux 249.45 ± 30.06 μg cm-2 jam-1 and percentage 62.35 ± 4.52 %. Cumulative penetration of dmsosom gel is 2954.95 ± 222.87 μg/cm2 with flux 381.68 ± 34.91 μg cm-2 jam-1and percentage 53.4 ± 3.65 %.Based on these results it can be concluded that ethosome is a better vesicle than dmsosome.
